The U.S. did not attend an annual meeting of the Convention on Cluster Munitions hosted by Lebanon this week.

The U.S. was invited to, but did not participate in the Second Meeting of States Parties of the Convention on Cluster Munitions hosted by Lebanon in Beirut on September 12-16. 

A total of 131 states participated in the meeting, including 40 observers and representatives from UN agencies, the ICRC, and Cluster Munition Coalition. Hundreds of delegates participated in field visits to southern Lebanon to observe cluster munition clearance, risk education, and victim assistance activities.

According to Cluster Munition Monitor 2011 by the Cluster Munition Coalition, a total of 109 countries have joined the Convention on Cluster Munitions, of which 61 are States Parties. A total of 12 States Parties have reported the destruction of 589,737 cluster munitions containing over 64.5 million submunitions.
